FROM THE MANUFACTURER Electric motors and generators are in countless devices, appliances, and vehicles we use every day. They are an essential technology in our modern world. With this kit, you can conduct 25 experiments to learn how an electric motor converts electricity into motion, and how an electric generator does just the opposite, converting motion into electricity. The electric motor is made of transparent plastic to show how the inside components work. Set up the motor to run on battery power and learn how a motor works. Then reconfigure the device to work in reverse as a hand-crank electric generator. Experiment with magnets to learn about the force of magnetism, and how magnetic fields relate to electric current. Build simple circuits consisting of the motor or generator, wires, and a light bulb to learn about the flow of electricity. Learn about gears and drive-trains and how they work to effectively convert kinetic energy into electrical energy and back again. The full-color, 48-page manual guides your experiments with step-by-step instructions.

Good product but limited
This is a really neat set. The hand crank generator build and the lesson on magnets and electric engines are great. The only problem is that once you’ve done those two projects the set is basically done. The booklet is well written and has good explanations but the set is very limited in scope. Very entertaining for 10-15 minutes then kind of a bummer when you realize you’re done.

Good for learning but cheaply made
The parts are easily breakable. My son loved it for the couple of hours he had it before the wires easily broke. Not really worth the money spent.

Great tool for younger learners, not so great as they age.
This is a fairly simple product that can be assembled in no more than 2 minutes with older learners leading to a boredom factor with them. But for your pre teens this is a great way to help them understand various ways of creating energy. You can generate it by turning the crank around (somehow the fact that they are creating their own electricity keeps them from ever getting bored). Or you can tap into it by drawing from the battery case. Once your learners understand these ideas the authors have prepared a couple dozen ways of exploring their application to various situations. This product is a great way to introduce these concepts to your family.

This was a fun purchase!
I really enjoyed assembling this kit! It had exactly what I'd wanted -- gears, magnets and coil, and a working mini generator. The kit does do a good job of illustrating the principles involved, and in a manner way more engaging than what is typically used in schools!! Or in my schools, anyway. The booklet was also very interesting. Overall, I think this item would make an excellent gift for an intellectually curious recipient!! As for its compatibility with other kits, specifically electronics, that's a good question! It does mention hooking up more than one generator together, so you ought to ask, because obviously, duh, that would be awesome! Overall, a fun purchase! Definitely giftable in my opinion.

Well made
I was excited to get this product for my children and they were happy to receive it. It is a well made product and not hard to put together. What really brings the product to life is the very informative booklet that comes with it. It tells about the history of magnetism and electricity, among other things. It also gives ideas of experiments to do with the product as a whole or by using specific parts. THE OVERALL CONSENSUS WITH MY CHILDREN FOR THIS PRODUCT IS 3 STARS, however, I gave it 4 stars because it has such an informative little booklet. I would recommend this product because of the price and the information it offers, but if you are looking for something that can transform and do many things I would recommend you look elsewhere.

Love this kit so much I bought it twice.
This is a simple kit that really teaches a lot of important concepts with only a few pieces. Back in the 1980's my parents owned a business that sold and rewound electric motors. This kit clearly demonstrates how electricity can use magnets to make motion (electric motor) or use motion to make electricity (generator). My kids love it so much they keep squirreling away the parts to play with, and it disappears. I highly recommend this kit, even over the other science kits that try to teach electrical circuits and other concepts.

Seems like an amazing educational company
This package was from around 2010, I hope Thames & Kosmos is still around, because they made these toys exceptionally well, perfect for learning kids. There's a handy small manual book for you to follow along to do the exercises.

Rather basic
I purchased this for my 8 yr old Grandson, the kit comes with a handheld wind up generator, a bulb in a holder a battery holder and two connecting wires. Whilst it is educational and interesting there really is not much you can do with it. I think for the cost it should have more equipment.

Cool stuff !!
Very good for my kids (14 years old girl and 9 years old boy) to have practical understanding of very basics of electrical engineering. I have helped them to assemble and able to show them what is gear ratio, what is commutator brush DC Motor and what is DC generator with the kit. Also a nice feature when you remove the red and blue magnets then neither the generator generates electricity nor the motor runs. The toy is not that you build generator or motor on your own hand. Rather it is assembled rotor with 3 commutators and two terminals which can be mounted with plastic gears and permanent magnets to act as BDC motor or generator. The assembly is very easy and it takes maximum 5 minutes for me and 10 minutes for my kids.

Great kit, useful not just for 8+ but also ...
Great kit, useful not just for 8+ but also for GCSE and IGCSE physics. I like the way you can build up the components of a motor and see why the magnets make a difference, for instance. Components feel solid and fit together well. Instruction booklet is great and streets ahead of the usual standard, with clear explanations. This kit ended up being indispensable in our KS3 science group when an alternative kit, ordered from a university science supplier, was hard to use.
